The game begins with you playing as Desmond Miles. Your goal is to expose details of the fight between the Knights Templar and the Assassins over an important artifact known as the Apple of Eden. With a machine called the Animus, you can view and control the genetic memories of your ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.
You will play a modern-day man named Desmond Miles. As the first entry to the Assassin's Creed series, this game introduces the characters during the Third Crusade to the Holy Land. The game is set in a fictional history wherein Assassins fight for peace with free will while the Templars desire peace through control.
